What is Methodist Youth Assembly?
An annual event of the Methodist Church, for 350 young people ages 11- 23.
Why does Methodist Youth Assembly exist?
To fulfil the Standing Orders of The Methodist Church, as outlined in the CPD: Standing Order 250
“(2) The Youth Assembly exists to provide an opportunity within the Methodist Church […] to hear and be informed by young people …”
Who enables Methodist Youth Assembly?
The event is planned by young people from across the Connexion who volunteer to be facilitators of the business of Youth Assembly, assisted by members of the Methodist Children and Youth Team.
Where is it held?
In 2010, the event will be held at the PGL Liddington site, near Swindon
When does it happen?
Friday 19th – Sunday 21st November 2010
Who can attend?
Any young person aged 11-23 who would like to. 64 tickets are held for District-designated representatives. All other tickets are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. All bookings must be made before September 6th 2010.
What happens at Youth Assembly?
Youth Assembly is a place for young people to listen to each other and to God, and to talk about the issues that really matter to them. It provides time and space for young people to worship together and have fun together. The outcomes from Youth Assembly are passed to Methodist Conference (the governance body of the Methodist Church) by young people elected at Youth Assembly. They are also recorded on the Methodist ‘Generous’ actions website, where other young people can sign up to act together on the issues raised. The Youth President elections are held at Youth Assembly, along with any other positions that are open to young people – for example, positions on Methodist Council or the Youth Participation Reference group.
Do youth leaders go with groups?
No, the young people come unaccompanied and the Methodist Children and Youth Team provide workers and volunteers to facilitate Youth Assembly.
Do young people need an adult to go with them?
No, it is not possible for us to accommodate adults at Youth Assembly. (We may be able to give out details of guest houses nearby to adults who wish to stay nearby rather than travel back and forth to the event.) We try to ensure that adults who drop young people off at the event at least get a cup of tea when they do!
Can young people go to Youth Assembly alone?
Yes, Youth Assembly is also a perfect place to enable young people to make friends and meet other like-minded people. It is quite usual for young people to attend alone.
How do I book?
By visiting the website at www.methodistyouthassesmbly.org.uk
How much do young people have to pay to attend?
The weekend costs £60, and that includes all your meals, accommodation, activities, and insurance.
Who pays for young people to attend?
Each District must pay for two places at Youth Assembly. Payment for other young people might come from other sources but is the responsibility of the young person/youth leader/parent/person making the booking.
Can I cancel a booking once it is made?
You can, but you will not be refunded your money as we have already committed funds against your booking. You can read our policy on this here.
How do young people get there?
The Methodist Children and Youth team do not arrange travel to Youth Assembly. This is the responsibility of the person attending. Some Districts arrange travel collectively for all young people going from their District. Free transport will be arranged from Swindon station to meet key train arrival times. At the station, people will be available to meet young people from these key trains and to escort them safely to the centre. All young people booked to attend will receive information about the free transport service from the station after the final booking deadline (September 6th) has passed.
Who pays for their travel?
The Methodist Children and Youth team do not included travel or insurance of this travel to and from Youth Assembly. However, a “pooled fare” system operates, whereby Districts who pay for travel enter their costs into a “pool” and then pay a fair share of the costs. This is designed to equalise the costs – wherever in the Connexion a young person attends from.
What about insurance cover?
Methodist Youth assembly is fully insured. However, this does not include travel insurance for young people going to and from the event.
Is it safe?
We take the safety of young people very seriously indeed. Our Safeguarding Policy will be fully adhered to. There will be a full team of professional youth workers in attendance. The PGL centre is risk assessed and has full First Aid cover.
What do young people need to bring?
A kit list will be provided, but no special equipment or clothing is needed.
Can young people with special needs or specific requirements attend?
Yes, if we can make it possible for young people to attend, we will. Methodist Youth Assembly welcomes all young people and we are committed to making Youth Assembly an event open to all. Please contact us and we will do all we can to assist.
